Last lesson on working on your robot

I was not happy with how the robot turned out and I wanted to improve it in some way. Instead of making it jump i wanted it to walk like it was supposed to do in the first place. I ditched the design set out by the NXT mindstorm website and decided to create my own design of the spider. I took the leg section apart and changed the structure of the gears using on either side one large one, two medium and two small ones. I also used the wider gears instead of the thin ones. I attached the legs to the gears instead of attaching them to another piece. This structure is more stable then the last one and it actually works. It moves backwards and forwards with no issues. I am so pleased with the result and i'm glad i decided to try and improve it.

Building our Spider

Our robot spider took a lot longer than expected as it was very simple. A lot of the connecting pieces we needed we did not have and had to improvise, our spider was unstable due to this. It looked different to the picture but it still looks fine. On our first test run to see if the spider could walk the legs section broke off as it was not connected very securely. After looking at how I could improve the robots stability i decided to try remake the leg section in my own way that would enable it to stay in place and not fall off. I fixed the robot making it stable but it still does not function properly. Instead of walking forward it jumps up and down. When the robot is in motion the legs move in all different directions. We've tried different things to get them to stay in place but nothing really works. I am not pleased with the result but I am happy that we still have something to put forward and that it still can move.

Choosing an Animal to create

We looked through the choices but cici really wanted to make a spider because it's "easy" but i wanted to make the dog or snake to challenge ourselves.

50cm and no more-
We tried the 50 cm and no more activity but it did not work as my USB port on my computer was not allowing the USB cord to connect the NXT brick to the Lego Mindstorms Education NXT Programming. I restarted my laptop and the USB port started working again.

There and back again-
At first we were not sure where we should place the blocks in the Mindstorm program, but after a couple tries we managed to get it working.

Brace, brace, brace-
The program did not run accordingly the first few times we tried to do the block, block, block activity. There were some minor errors but we accomplished it with a few more tries.

Edge finder-
This worked pretty well the first time, just when the robot turned it turned to much, that just had to be altered.

Walls and Edges-
The aim is when the robot hits an edge or wall it moves forward and rotates around. The only issue is that the robot rotated too much but that was easily adjusted to.

Building the Robot

Mindstorm Lego Robot
Our robot took about a total of 2 weeks to build. We had some difficulties in building our robot as we were picking up the wrong pieces because we did not look at the key in the front of the manual. Once we looked at the key and worked out which pieces we were meant to be using, building the robot became easier and each lesson. This lesson we finished building our robot, and we tested its movement.
